THINKING ABOUT HIRING A LAWYER? WHAT KIND OF A LAWYER DO YOU WANT?

We care about our reputation and the reputation of attorneys in general. Although lawyer advertising works, we’ve never run television spots or yellow pages ads bragging about earning “millions of dollars for our client” or that that promise to do the same for you. Why? We don’t need to; the vast majority of our clients come to us as personal referrals. Before you hire an attorney, or even meet with a lawyer to discuss your case, ask yourself whether the lawyer has the knowledge, skills, experience, integrity, and reputation to provide you with the best representation. The fact is that many “law firms” take in hundreds, or even thousands of cases and then hand them off to paralegals or poorly paid newly-minted lawyers without the experience to handle your case. These lawyers sound great on paper and the actors may look great on the TV, but they might not be what you really need.

DO THE RESEARCH - ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU CALL ANYONE

Open a phone book, or go on the web, and you’ll see hundreds of attorney advertisements. Some lawyers are great and some are not so great. How can you tell which is which? If you are reading this website, you know how to use the internet to research attorneys profiles. Before you call an 800 number out of a phone book or off a television advertisement, ask yourself the following questions:

  • How many cases has the attorney really completed?
  • Does the lawyer’s advertisement on television really tell you who your lawyer will be, or is the “lawyer” on television just an actor that looks and sounds like the lawyer who made the ad wishes he looks and sounded?
  • How many trials has the lawyer actually done?
  • Does the lawyer really so the work himself, or does he hand off the cases to a team of paralegals working in his office?
  • Does the lawyer advertise for every type of case?
  • Can a lawyer really be an expert at every type of case imaginable?
  • Is the lawyer local or actually based in a city or county you’ve never been to in your whole life, or is he really five hours away from your home and just advertising everywhere?
  • Does the lawyer care about the community and his place in the community?
  • How do other lawyers in the courthouse feel about the lawyer?
  • Do the insurance adjusters know the lawyer?

CONSIDERING HANDLING YOUR PERSONAL INJURY CASE ALONE?

If you’ve been injured and you are trying to decide whether to hire an attorney, consider whether you are ready to put your life on hold while you try to learn the skills that we have taken years to master. If you have been injured and are trying to decide whether to hire an attorney ask yourself ask yourself whether you should try to be your own lawyer. Do you know the answers to the following questions?

  • Do you know how insurance companies handle claims?
  • Do you know the claims process?
  • Do you know how to present a claim to an insurer so that it gets maximum value?
  • Do you know how to get the insurance adjuster to look past the hundreds of claims on her desk and focus on yours?
  • Do you know how to prepare your claim?
  • Do you know what pictures, documents and forms the adjuster needs in order to value your claim?
  • Do you know how to coordinate the defendant’s liability insurance with your health insurance, your medical payments coverage or personal injury protection?
  • If you recover for a personal injury, do you have to pay your health insurer back?
  • Do you have to pay taxes on your recovery?
  • How much money should you get, and what makes the insurance companies decide to pay you?

Unless you know what you are doing, you will be taken advantage of by the insurance companies. Insurance adjusters are smart and hardworking. They are professional and very well-trained. They know what they are doing. Do you? Do you think they could do your job? They probably can’t and you can’t do theirs either, so don’t try.
